Chapter Twelve

As Hunter poured himself another drink, he watched Viviana from across the room. She was standing on the balcony off of the game room, staring out at the mountains in the distance.

After dinner, a few of them, including her, headed to the game room, but Hunter wanted her to himself. He finally was ready to hear her tell him why she’d left him for Thomas.

He just wasn’t sure she was ready to talk.

He carried the drinks to the balcony. “Here you go,” he said, handing her the water. “Are you sure you don’t want something a little stronger?”

“Nah, I already had two glasses of wine, but thank you.” She gave him a timid smile and turned back to the mountains.

He leaned against the railing and sipped his drink, watching the sun slowly slip behind the mountains. “You look deep in thought. What’s on your mind?” he asked.

“I was just thinking about how peaceful it is out here. I can barely see the neighbors’ houses. Have you rented this place before?”

“No, but I heard that it’s for sale. You interested?”

She cracked a smile. “I do need to move out of Dannette’s place, but this is way too big for one person. I’m thinking about taking one of the suites at the hotel and living in it.”

“Hmm, that’s an interesting idea. Are you sure you want to live that close to work? You’re already a workaholic. Living that close, you might never leave the office.”

She turned to him, those beautiful eyes sparkling under the dim evening sky.

He wanted her.

Damn. He wanted to carry her into the house, away from prying eyes, and love on her incredible body.

He wanted to remind her of how good things used to be between them.

But he couldn’t. At least not until he knew the truth about her and Thomas.

“You always did know me better than anyone,” she said softly. “And you’re right, me living in the hotel is a horrible idea.”

They both laughed. He loved when she laughed, and based on the little he’d garnered from Dannette, Viviana hadn’t been happy in a long time. He wanted to know why.

“There’s so much I don’t know about you, and I think it’s time we changed that,” Hunter said. “We need to talk.”

She stared at him for so long without responding that he thought she wouldn’t, but then she said, “Okay.”

Okay. The word was spoken so quietly he barely heard her.

“Listen.” He slid his free arm around her and let his hand rest on the small of her back as he leaned in close. “If you’re not ready to tell—”

“I’ve wanted to tell you from the day I had to leave. You’re right, Hunter, it’s time.” She glanced down at the water bottle that she was gripping tightly with two hands. “I need you to know that I never wanted to—”

“Not here,” he interrupted and reached for her hand. “Come with me and we’ll go somewhere a little more private.”

They walked back into the room just as Dannette was coming to them.
